Ryan Peterson

Ryan Peterson is a consumer protection attorney with extensive experience helping people facing credit reporting errors, debt collection problems, and other issues involving their consumer rights. His career has given him experience on both sides of debt collection disputes, helping him understand how collection companies operate and how consumers can protect themselves.

Ryan began his legal career in 2010 at a debt collection law firm, where he learned the rules governing consumer debt collection, particularly the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA). That experience ultimately led him to shift his focus toward representing consumers treated unfairly by banks, consumer reporting agencies, landlords, and other large institutions.

Ryan later spent ten years running his own practice, bringing federal lawsuits involving violations of the FDCPA and Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). He also defended consumers sued over unsecured debts in state court. His work included securing decisions finding that the FDCPA applies to attorneys in Minnesota who evict tenants for alleged non-payment of rent.

Ryan earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota and his J.D. from William Mitchell College of Law, now known as Mitchell Hamline School of Law.

Outside of his casework, Ryan has focused on consumer education and public service. He has taught community education classes showing consumers how to prepare their own credit report disputes and served as a commissioner on the Minneapolis Commission on Civil Rights.

Today, Ryan’s practice includes credit report errors, bankruptcy reporting errors, mixed credit files, deceased reporting, background check errors, identity theft recovery, EFTA and FCBA violations, and debt collection harassment. He is also a member of the National Association of Consumer Advocates.
